This meeting took place between Roy Court and Tracey the Inas-fid GB National Director. On Monday 10th March . These talks were held, due to the inas-fid world organisation introducing the sport of judo into its programme world-wide. Inas-fid is a world registered organisation for people with an intellectual disability. It is also a full member of the IPC Committee.
The World Headquarters for this organisation is based in Sweden. Each country has its own National Committee, in GB there are representatives from the 4 home countries on the committee and board of directors. Inas-fid has members from 86 countries throughout the world and hold events and competitions on an international and global games basis.
It is a similar organisation to IBSA of which you know our visually impaired athletes compete at an elite level.
The first European Championships for judo has been organised in France in June 2008, but unfortunately we have no GB athletes registered at present and it is the policy of the organisation that athletes must be registered so many weeks before an event. So with the discussions with the inas-fid director, we have decided to explore the possibility of getting our elite athletes (level / 2 ) registered for future judo games.Hopefully we could have a GB Judo team in the Inas-Fid Global Games in Czechoslovakia in July 2009. Due to the strict controls of the eligibility of athletes in inas-fid the athlete application forms have to be processed in the correct manner and official reports added to it.
These forms are broken down into sections;a. Parents/Guardian Section.b. Chartered Psychologist Section.c. Coaches Sectiond. Inas – fid Section.e. You should also attach any other reports or documents you have with 3 passport photographs which will support your eligibility application. It is stressed that Chartered Psychologists use the Vineland Adaptive Behaviour Scales and the Wechsler Intellectual IQ Scales. When filling in their section. The cost of these tests I am told are fundraised for individual athletes. Costs vary in regions.
If you would like me to send you a pack for your elite athletes, please email ; royjudo2@hotmail.co.uk . There are many guidelines and explanatory notes attached to the document. It is my belief for our future athletes, we become involved in this organisation, which will give our future athletes a further goal in the sport of judo. The promotion of the sport of judo by any organisation of an international standing, will surely help in the BJA getting more publicity and the sport of judo will definitely benefit. This will only enhance our work and provide further opportunities for our athletes especially at an elite level, which will give and set a goal for all our younger SN athletes with an intellectual disability. Like our visually impaired athletes in IBSA, the BJA would be the organisation in GB, in selecting teams for INAS-FID Tournaments. I would like the BJA Inclusion committee to endorse the INAS-FID events and allow clubs and coaches at this time to register their level / 2 players for future INAS-FID events. Whilst this is going on the Director of INAS-FID in GB, would welcome further discussions with the BJA on how this opportunity could work. Please Note; This opportunity is for intellectual disabled athletes at elite level all who would have been tested and have an IQ of 75% or below. They will eventually have the opportunity to compete has a GB Team in European/Inter-continental/World and Global Games in the sport of judo.Wouldn’t it be great if they could compete in the paralympic games in London in 2012, but we know this is not possible. But what is possible is the paralympic games in 2016 or 2012. For the present moment there are going to be further discussions and hopefully we can make a start in getting our elite athletes registered. You can get help and advice from your local Sports Council Disability Officer, who will also help you with advice and checklist for the forms.
